WORD GAME STRATEGY

Wordle Starting Words

A useful opening word gives you information. The aim is not to guess the answer immediately, but to test common letters and learn which positions are worth exploring next.

What makes a useful starting word?

A balanced opener tests several frequent letters without repeating a letter unnecessarily. Many players prefer to include common vowels and consonants, then use the color feedback to build the next guess. There is no single opening word that is best for every answer list or strategy.

These are examples to compare, not an official ranking. Different answer distributions and accepted-guess lists can change which word provides the most information.

Choose a strategy and stay consistent

A coverage-first approach tests several common letters. A vowel-first approach checks a few likely vowels early. A position-focused approach uses the first feedback to test likely letter placements. Whichever you choose, avoid repeating known gray letters unless the feedback suggests a repeated letter is possible.

Use the clues correctly

Green letters stay in their exact positions. Yellow letters must appear somewhere else. Gray feedback needs care when a guess contains a repeated letter, because one copy can be present while another copy is absent.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one mathematically best starting word?

It depends on the answer set, scoring objective and whether you optimize expected remaining candidates, probability of an immediate solve, or ease of remembering the word.

Should a starting word use all five different letters?

For an information-first opening, five distinct letters usually test more symbols. Repeated letters can still be useful later when the clues suggest duplication.

Are these official Wordle answers?

No. They are ordinary opening-word examples. This site is independent and does not publish or fetch another publisher's daily answer.
